About Biodiesel - Handling and Use Guidelines

We encourage our customers and users of biodiesel to become educated as to the benefits, proper use, and limitations associated with this type of alternative fuel. For additional information please contact us at 775-783-0123 or email us. Always follow the safety precautions outlined in the product Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

1. Only purchase and use biodiesel that meets ASTM D-6751 specifications. Our biodiesel meets these specifications. Please note that product sold may be blended to contain 0.1% petroleum distillates.

2. Biodiesel is non-toxic in its pure state. Mixtures with petroleum diesel are not. Do not drink it and always protect your skin and eyes when handling.

3. Biodiesel is of the safest fuels to handle and store. Although considered non-flammable, biodiesel will burn if heated above 250 °F. Keep away from sources of heat.

4. Pure Biodiesel (B100) will not flow at low temperatures. Contact us for blend recommendations or equipment heating options for cold climate operation (below 45 °F).

5. Fuel filter plugging can occur because biodiesel cleans old deposits from fuel systems. Keep a spare fuel filter handy and know how to change it.

6. Biodiesel can degrade certain plastics, rubbers, paints, and adhesives. Contact your equipment manufacturer if you suspect material compatibility issues. Clean up small spills with soap and water.

7. Biodiesel is readily biodegradable in the environment which means it will support bacterial growth in storage tanks. Drain water and sludge out of storage tanks regularly.

8. Biodiesel can oxidize over time. Store in airtight containers until ready to use and protect from excessive heat. Steel, aluminum, or polyethylene containers work best. Avoid contact with metals such as brass, copper, bronze, tin and zinc.

9. Biodiesel has about 10% less energy per gallon than petroleum diesel. Fuel efficiency losses between 5 and 7% are typical for B100.

10. Biodiesel can be blended with diesel, kerosene, or home heating oil at any concentration. When blended, please follow the more restrictive handling and use precautions for petroleum distillates.
